PVC strip doors are one of the most widely used and straightforwardly practical industrial access solutions, but the difference between a strip door that lasts three months and one that performs reliably for three years often comes down to specification decisions made at the time of purchase. The most common source of premature failure is using strip doors designed for pedestrian traffic in forklift applications — the forces involved are simply of a different order of magnitude, and light-gauge strips that flex comfortably for a person will tear, kink, and split when struck by a loaded forklift mast.
For forklift applications, the minimum specification should be 3 mm thick PVC strips in 200 mm wide format. Heavy-duty forklift lanes — particularly those used by counterbalance forklifts with raised loads or side-loading forklifts with long carriages — should use 4 mm thick ribbed strips in 300 mm wide format. The ribbed profile adds rigidity and impact resistance while maintaining flexibility, and the wider format means fewer strip-to-strip junctions across the door width, reducing the number of potential tear initiation points. The overlap between adjacent strips should be at least 50% — in high-cycle forklift applications, 100% double overlap is worth the additional cost.
The mounting system is as important as the strip specification. Fixed-mount systems where strips hang from hooks or bolts in a header rail are adequate for low-cycle applications, but in busy forklift lanes, the repeated impact force tends to work mounting hardware loose over time. Sliding-hook systems that allow strips to deflect laterally as well as longitudinally handle impact forces more gracefully and significantly extend hardware life. For very wide openings — 3 m or more — a properly engineered header rail with appropriate section strength to resist the cumulative weight and impact of multiple heavy strips is essential; undersized header rails will deflect and eventually fail.
Maintenance is the other critical factor. Strip doors require a regular inspection regime — monthly in heavy forklift applications — to identify strips that are cracking, tearing at the mounting point, or developing permanent kinks that prevent them from returning to their resting position. Individual strips can be replaced without removing the entire set, and the ability to do this in-house without calling a specialist engineer is one of the most important practical advantages of PVC strip systems. Keep a stock of replacement strips in the correct specification — ordering strips from a different supplier after the original installation often results in a mismatched overlap pattern that compromises the door's performance.
